PROBLEM
Receipts allow us to confirm purchases, track spendings, and process returns or product warranties. However, the piling of receipts overtime can become overwhelming and difficult to manage. To add on to theinconvenience, receipt paper often contain BPA (bisphenol A), which are toxic hormone disruptors that couldinterfere with fetal development, reproduction, and increase the chance cancer [1]. It is also alarming to notethat over 4 billion pounds of CO2 are produced each year through the manufacturing of receipts [2].
“How might we simplify the collection of receipts and protect users from harmful chemicals, while also reducing CO2 emitted during receipt production?”
03.
PERSONA
We began our design process by sharing our personal experience with receipts, looking into the preferred method of collection, frequency of use, and challenges associated with digital receipts and apps currently existing in the market. We discovered two main problems associated with current digital methods of receipt collection.

  1. Many pre-existing receipt organization apps reply on the method of scanning printed copies of receipts, which does not address the issue of waste production.
  2. Receipts collected through email cannot be complied and are easily lost inside the inbox.
04.
PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS
  • Allow users to collect multiple receipts with automatic data entry
  • Allow users to view and manage (order, edit, delete, share, etc.) receipt content
  • Entirely eliminate the accumulation of paper receipts
05.
USER FLOW
Our app would serve two types of users:

  1. Customers - for receiving and managing receipts
  2. Merchants/Stores - for distributing sales receipts to customers and processing return receipts
My primary goal was to design the process of  customers scanning receipts onto the app, customizing the organization of the receipts, and vieiwng receipt information on the app dashbaord.

STYLESCAPE
Before moving onto the high-fidelity prototype, I determined the colour scheme, typography, and product logo to establish brand cohesion across the app.

PITCHING
Among 100 project submissions, Keeper was selected as a Top 8 Finalist! Our team had the opportunity to present our app LIVE to 500 competitors, judges, and sponsors.

Next Steps
Conduct further research and collect feedback from users regarding the app's accessibility and usability.

Create alternative screen layouts compatible with wearable devices (e.g. Apple watches) - to beimplemented when connection to external devices is established within the app's internal system.

Continue developing the merchant platform - implement compatibility with payment machines.

Add an onboarding/sign-in feature to allow users to securely access their accounts from any device.
